The term best friend is overly used. Some people I’m being friends with -and you might as well do- claim and declare number of people as their best friends. Not singular but plural. Best, as what we learn, stands for the highest degree of comparison. So doesn’t it project the best instead? Represents the one that apparently stands out?

When these declaring-many-people-as-bestfriend people do that to their same group circle of friends, means all member in the group are befriended with each other and equally close, it is unlikely to raise problem of ‘best friend’ title.

However, if one individual is a friend to a person, whereas not befriended with this person are friends with (read: not in the same group), it can cause disappointment. Not as in jealousy, but more likely as “You don’t mean it about me as your best” disappointment. Moreover, this person will develop gradual backing-off attitude, decreasing respect, and cautiously shifting this person’s behavior towards the claiming-many-people-as-bestfriend friend.

To avoid these kinds of problem which caused by yourself, learn to be thoughtful of how your friend(s) would perceive the title and aware there are other adjectives available to rate your friendship. Above all, educate yourself about original definition of word ‘best’ and how ‘best’ implies great value.
